Abstract

To find out how direction and distance affect how primer residue is distributed from the K-2 automatic rifle and CAL.45 pistol, the major firearms used in the military, the muzzle of each weapon was pointed in four directions and fired at 40, 80, 120 and 160 cm with the front of the muzzle indicating the direction. Then, the primer sample was collected. The collection from the shooting point of the right hand was tested separately. Analysis using the SEM/EDS show that the most primer was detected in the frontright (where the cartridge is ejected)backleft, in that order for the K-2. For the CAL.45, the most primer was detected based on the direction of the muzzle compared to the right, left, and back, which show similar rates of detection. As for how distance affects the primer detection rate, the detection rate for the front kept increasing until 160 cm for the K-2; however, for the CAL.45, the primer detection rate increased until 80 cm and then decreased rapidly. Both the K-2 and CAL.45 demonstrated an increasing detection rate for the right side where the cartridge was driven out. As for the left and back side, the detection rate increased until 80 cm and started the decrease as the distance surpassed 80 cm.
