Abstract

This study aimed to study the effects of incarceration on the characteristics of homes and suggests family-oriented correction treatments to counter those effects. For this study, data on 704 married male inmates (552 jail inmates and 152 prisoners to be released) were collected and analyzed. Inmates were divided into those who are in their early incarceration days awaiting sentencing(Jail Inmates) and those who were already sentenced and were awaiting their release(Prisoners). These inmates were then compared through the chi-square test on the characteristics of their home (marriage, family stability, finances, primary caregiver, communication with family, children in need of care, caregiver, awareness of incarceration). The main findings and the suggested correction treatment were as follows. The difference between Jail Inmates and Prisoners showed a statistically significant result in most of the variables in the characteristics of their home. However, whether the home had an underaged child did not show a significant difference. Specifically, Prisoners showed negative results in unstable marriages, family disorganization, the role of the primary caregiver, and communication with the family, while Jail Inmates showed adverse effects in family finances. Regarding children, those with Prisoners were more aware of the instability of the caregiver and the incarceration. Furthermore, this study suggested a family-oriented correction treatment to counter the negative changes that occur upon incarceration. In addition, the study discussed the purpose and objectives of “family-oriented correction treatment” and lists specific programs and services for each detailed objectives.
