Abstract
One of the most profound losses inmates suffer is the companionship and contact with significant others in their lives. Inmates' ties to family probably has a positive effects because it is related to improved inmate behavior, readjusted live after release, reduced rates of recidivism. This article examines the realities and effects of family visitation-one method which maintaines family ties- on male and female inmates. For this research, data were collected from 556 male and female inmates in prisons. Major findings are as followes: The frequency of family visitation was related the will to change after release, views about family relationship and family support after release among male and female inmates. And for male inmates, family and children(including minor children) visitation were assosiated views about family relationship and family support after release. For female inmates, those who didn't want to receive visits from their minor children showed more positive will to change after release. The clear policy implication from this study is that economic support to increase family visitation is needed. For male inmates, visitation support is more needed. For female inmates, visitaion support and programs eliminating barriers to prison visitation are more needed.
