Abstract
The aim of this study was to obtain a variety of animal hair samples, analyse the morphological elements of the hair and classify them into types to provide a basis for the identification and provenance of hair evidence After obtaining 34 animal hair samples and analysing the three morphological factors of cuticle, medulla, and medullary index, the results showed that the cuticle was divided into 6 types: CI (41%), CR (26%), CA (12%), CS (12%), CH (6%), CE (3%), medulla was divided into 7 types: MA (50%), MC (18%), MG (11.8%), MU (8. 5%), MM(6%), ML(3%), MZ(3%), medullary index could be classified into 5 types: G4 type (0.31~0.40, 3%), G5 type (0.41~0.50, 21%), G6 type (0.51~0.60, 35%), G7 type (0.61~0.70, 21%), G8 type (0.71~0.80, 15%), G9 type (0.81~0.90, 6%). The morphological elements of animal hair have shown that different animal species may have the same morphological characteristics, and even within the same family, there may be differences in the types of characteristics exhibited depending on the species. By applying the cuticle-medulla composite type, we were able to classify 34 samples into a total of 16 types, and found that the classification was more detailed than we had using a single factor. In addition, as a result of applying the medullary index, CI-MA (11 species) with class characteristics could be classified into three groups and CR-MA (4 species) into two groups, confirming that by applying different analytical factors it is possible to make a detailed classification close to personal identification.
