Abstract

Since the modern times, humans have regarded themselves as the masters of the world and as the only beings on earth who can create new spiritual things by using machines and materials as tools. Robots modeled after human image and made by humans initially functioned as human tools, but as their mental functions gradually evolved and even reached the replication of human sensibility, they became threats to humans. The ‘Frankenstein Complex’ refers to the fear and disgust of humans towards robots, the doubt and dissatisfaction of robots towards humans, and anxiety over the indistinguishability of humans and robots. This study focuses on the creativity problem at the root of the Frankenstein complex. The emergence of creative machines or robot-artists must be an object of anxiety and fear, in the ‘anthropocentristic’ thinking that creation should be the domain of humans. This study attempts to explain the uncanny affect, a response to hybrid beings, by reading a creating machine or robot-artist from a non-humanistic point of view.
