Abstract

It seems that tattoos were an universal style in the primitive times, ancient oriental culture and western culture. Consequently, the desire of human beings to obtain tattoos is the same, although the reason to get tattoos is different from sociocultural and institutional regulation. Nevertheless, it can not help raising a question how come tattoos have strongly got a negative images for a long time? With premising these questions related to the social stream and conflict on tattoos, it is necessary to probe tattoo cultures with new perspectives. In this context, this study firstly looks into the origins and transition process based on History of Three States and the Later[Eastern] Han book. Secondly, we need to find sourceful reason why the negative image of tattoo fixed throughout the Koryo Dynasty and at the beginning of Chosun dynasty on the basis of confucian viewpoint on human body. Thirdly, especially in Chosun, we considered whether tattoo punishments were privately utilized, besides tattoo punishments were used to regulate and control people by government power. Because we have intention of proving the fact that tattooing culture has never disappeared in an instant. Lastly, the purpose of this study lies in searching for whether similar punishment tattooing as that of Chosun dynasty is still transmitted within contemporary legal or institutional frames or whether there are any cases of violation of human rights, disclose interrelationship among them and present the pending problems.
