Abstract

The purpose of current study is to investigate Central Police Academy students’ perceptions of rape and factors affecting their perceptions. Based on previous research, demographic factors (gender, age, education level, socioeconomic level, religion, residence area, religious level, method to be hired), acquaintance’s experience of sex offence victim, education of anti-sex offences, education of anti-prostitution, prostitution experience, empathy level, attitudes toward women, rape myth, and pornograph watching were examined as independent variables. In order to measure dependent variable, perception of rape, three different perpetrators were employed; stranger, acquaintance, and spouse. Using self-administered survey method, Police Academy students were participated in survey. Multiple regression revealed that a respondent with a higher economic status and higher level of rape myth was more likely to demonstrate lower level of perception toward stranger rape. Regarding acquaintance rape, a respondent with biased attitudes toward women and higher level of rape myth was more likely to show lower level of perception toward stranger rape. In terms of spouse rape, a respondent with lower empathy level, biased attitudes toward women, and higher level of rape myth was more likely to demonstrate lower level of perception toward stranger rape. Based on research results, developing education programs aimed at enhancing empathy, improving perception toward women and eradicating rape myth is provided as policy implications. Especially, those education programs need to be focused on male police officers. In addition, the currently mandatory education of anti-sex offence, sexual harrassment, prostitution and domestic violence need to be modified to enhance the effectiveness.
