Abstract

The major objective of this research is to find out what factors affect liners' port selection by trade route. This study focuses on two distinct routes: one on trunk routes covering trans-Pacific trade and trans-European trade between Far-east Asia, and North America and Europe, respectively; the other on short sea routes in intra-Asia trade. The major methodology of this research is to survey the major liners. The survey form is to be distributed to the lines operating both on mainhaul services and on intra-Asia services. Applied methods include factor analysis, cluster analysis and t-test to check how questions and sampled companies reacted to the given survey form. It is found that there are six variables showing statistical significance from the sampled data. In addition, there is distinction between the factors, based on which shipping lines on trunk route and short sea routes choose ports for their routing decision, respectively. Some caveats are discussed in interpreting the results.
