Abstract

This paper analyses the choice of container shipping modes for 6 routes between the Port of Incheon and six destination ports in China, in which car ferries have competed with container liners. The analysis employs the binary logit model with data collected from 247 Korean shippers for export and import in the Capital Region. The survey reveals basic characteristics and preferences related to the choice of shipping modes. The results indicate that, in order to choose the transport mode, shippers consider several other factors in addition to the ocean freight rate, and they can change their shipping modes under certain conditions. However, the empirical analysis identifies that ocean freight rate per mile, the difference of transit time between car ferries and container liners, the volume of shipping and the characteristics of container cargo are statistically significant. On the other hand, the difference of service level between car ferries and container liners is statistically insignificant.
