Abstract
While offline gambling was the norm in the past, the current trend shows that people are increasingly accessing online gambling sites, placing bets with money or other financial resources (e.g., items) in hopes of financial gain. Generally, gambling involves the risk of both financial losses and gains. Among adolescents, cyber-gambling often leads to delinquency and deviant behavior. Due to frequent interaction with peers and acquaintances during adolescence, group cultures are formed, shared, imitated, and passed on, resulting in a subculture that can spread among many students. This study employed a phenomenological approach to investigate the reasons adolescents become curious about cyber-gambling, the factors that reinforce continued gambling behavior, the contexts in which they gamble (including where, when, and with whom), the triggers that initiate gambling behavior, and the economic, psychological, and social harms they experience as a result. The purpose of this study was to identify the phenomenological characteristics related to the research questions and to examine how adolescent cyber-gambling experiences align with the continuum of delinquency and deviance. Furthermore, the study aimed to explore characteristics associated with adolescent cyber-gambling to inform the development of prevention strategies and intervention programs within homes, schools, community youth centers, and local gambling prevention and response agencies. Based on these findings, the study provided policy recommendations for preventing adolescent involvement in cyber-gambling.
