한국 예비부부의 관계 및 커플유형 분석: PREPARE 결과를 중심으로

초록

최근 우리사회는 급격한 이혼율의 증가를 경험하고 있다. 그러나 급격히 진행되고 있는 결혼해체의 양상에 대해 우리사회의 대응은 위기이후의 (사후적) 개입방법 등 매우 제한적인 범위에서 이루어지고 있는 것이 현실이다. 이러한 현실의 예방적인 측면에 초점을 둔 본 연구는 1)PREPARE 도구를 활용한 예비부부 프로그램의 효과성과 결혼관계 예측에 대한 경험연구를 소개하고, 2)개별상담 혹은 예비부부 프로그램에 참여하여 PREPARE (Premarital Personal and Relationship Evaluation) 질문지를 작성한 460쌍의 예비부부(전체 920명)를 대상으로 하여 그 결과를 통해 한국 커플들의 특성과 유형 및 다양한 관계영역에 대해 고찰하고 이를 외국의 연구와 비교하려는 것을 주 목적으로 하였다. 연구 결과 한국 예비부부의 커플유형은 고르게 분포되어 있지 않으며 전통적 커플이 가장 많고 다음으로 활기찬 커플이 주류를 이룬다는 것을 볼 수 있었다 (활기찬 커플 28.9%, 조화로운 커플 11.1%, 전통적 커플 40.2%, 갈등있는 커플 19.8%). 특별히 주목할 만한 결과는 한국 예비부부는 커플유형을 막론하고 11개의 관계영역 중 결혼에 대한 현실감이 매우 낮은 특징을 보인다는 것이다. 이는 미국의 연구와 비교하였을 때도 두드러지는 차이를 보였다. 또한 미국 예비부부에 비하여 활기찬 커플의 갈등해결이나 여가활동 등의 영역에서 낮은 점수를 기록하였지만 자녀양육이나 가족친구 또는 역할관계에서는 비교적 유사한 양상을 보였다. 본 연구는 모든 예비부부에게 동일한 프로그램을 제공하기보다는 PREPARE를 통해 커플유형을 선별하고 결혼불만족이나 이혼의 위기 혹은 갈등의 위기에 처할 가능성이 있는 고위험 예비부부에게 더욱 초점을 맞추어 상담을 할 수 있도록 방향을 제시해줄 수 있다는 점을 시사해준다. 또한 예비부부를 대상으로 하는 상담자는 일반적으로 커플이 갖는 결혼에 대한 기대를 현실화시키는 과정을 거쳐야 하는 것에 대한 중요성을 시사해주고 있다. 이 밖에 본 연구가 갖는 몇몇 연구적 함의가 논의되었다. * 주제어: PREPARE, 결혼, 예비부부 프로그램, 예비부부의 관계, 결혼에 대한 기대

Abstract

This study examined Korean premarital couples' relationship, couple types, and characteristics, and compared the findings with those from the American sample of premarital couples. The data used for the study included answers from 460 couples who each completed a PREPARE couples evaluation form either at individual couples counseling sessions or at premarital group programs. The main findings indicate that the Traditional couple type is the most common type among Korean couples(40.2%), followed by the Vitalized(28.9%), the Conflicted(19.8%) and the Harmonious(11.1%) types. Of special interest is that, regardless of couple types, all Korean premarital couples scored low in realistic expectations toward marriage whereas American sample differed in realistic expectations according to couple types. Several practice and research implications including cultural differences as well as limitations of the study are discussed.
