본 연구는 친인척 위탁가정의 모자와 이야기치료 기법으로 상담한 사례 연구이다. 8회의 상담을 통해 모자는 위탁아동의 훔치기와 거짓말로 인한 위탁해지 위기를 극복하였다. 본 연구 사례에서는 이야기치료, 특히 외재화기법을 주로 사용하였다. 아동의 문제행동을 아동이 큰엄마 식구와 한 가족이 되기를 원치 않는 ‘욕심쟁이’의 책략으로 외재화시켰다. 아동과 욕심쟁이가 분리되면서 아동과 위탁부모가 욕심쟁이를 물리치기 위하여 협력하고, 문제에 대처하는 아동의 경험이 늘었다. 또한 큰엄마는 위탁양육에 대한 사회의 부정적 태도와 아동의 대한 불신으로 엮이는 위탁입양에 대한 문제중심의 이야기를 해체하였다. 이야기치료를 통하여 아동의 문제행동이 거의 사라졌고, 모자간의 긍정적 상호작용도 증대하였다. 그 결과 큰엄마는 아동을 위탁 양육하기로 결정하였다. 본 연구를 통해 이야기치료가 아동과 가족상담, 특히 문제가 사람과 동일시되어 갈등이 심한 가족관계에서 효과적이라는 것을 확인할 수 있다.
Abstract
This case study describes the use of narrative therapy with a mother and a foster child who was also her nephew. Primarily through the use of the narrative therapy technique of “externalization”, the therapist was able to help the mother and child overcome a crisis that was threatening the foster care arrangement. Over a period of eight sessions, the mother and foster son worked to separate him from the externalized problem of “avarice,” which had been causing him to steal and lie. As the mother moved beyond her problem-saturated stories, the foster son’s problematic behavior disappeared, and positive interactions between them increased. This case illustrates the usefulness of narrative therapy in working with families, even in highly conflictual foster care settings.
