Abstract
There has been a lack of concern with the well-being of families in poverty while the society pays attention to well-being at the general level. This study explored the factors that influence the well-being of families in poverty. Previous research on poor families has been concentrated on the deprivation of family resource and problems in family functioning. In contrast, studies on the well-being of families in poverty calls attention to the positive emotion and life satisfaction which can help discover factors that would enable family service practitioners to recognize and utilize potential strengths of the family. Secondary data analysis of the survey results conducted at four disadvantaged areas in Seoul revealed three major findings as follows: 1) There was a moderate level of correlation between the subjective well-being and life satisfaction which meant that the respondents who experienced a higher level of emotional well-being tended to have higher level of life satisfaction. 2) Emotional well-being was significantly explained by individual, familial, and social dimensions. Women who perceived their families to have more communication and family activities, and those who perceived to have received more emotional regard and support tended to experience higher emotional well-being. 3) Life satisfaction was also significantly explained by individual, familial, and social dimensions. Specifically, respondents who had religion, those who perceived their current health status to be better, those families to share chores and to have received practical help from their social network tended to have higher life satisfaction. Implications for family welfare services including family therapy and counseling were suggested. KEY WORDS: families in poverty, well-being of the poor family, subjective well-being, life satisfaction
