Abstract

Adolescence is a crucial time for developing self-identity and expanding social relationships, where appearance and skin health play significant roles in peer interactions. Acne, one of the most prevalent skin conditions, can diminish adolescents' confidence in their appearance, leading to stress related to their looks and psychological withdrawal. This study aimed to analyze the impact of appearance-related stress on interpersonal relationships among adolescents with acne-prone skin and to investigate the mediating role of appearance satisfaction in this relationship. The research involved 603 adolescents ranging from the first year of middle school to the third year of high school. Data were gathered through face-to-face surveys, during which the researcher confirmed the presence of acne directly. The questionnaire included 13 items on appearance stress, 7items on appearance satisfaction, 10 items on interpersonal relationships, and 5 items on general characteristics. Data analysis was performed using SPSS WIN 27.0, employing frequency analysis, reliability and validity checks, correlation analysis, regression analysis, and mediation effect testing. The results indicated that appearance stress negatively impacted both appearance satisfaction and interpersonal relationships, while appearance satisfaction was positively associated with interpersonal relationship variables. Notably, appearance satisfaction partially mediated the relationship between appearance stress and interpersonal relationships, helping to mitigate the negative effects of appearance stress. This study empirically confirmed the psychological factors through which appearance stress influences the development of interpersonal relationships in adolescents with acne-prone skin. These findings highlight the importance of acne management and psychological interventions during adolescence and suggest that the results could serve as foundational data for educational settings.
