Abstract

Since humans are inherently social beings who thrive in relationships, the role of appearance in adapting successfully to life is both fundamental and crucial. In modern society, the rapid rise of social media platforms and the pervasive influence of mass media have heightened external exposure, positioning appearance not only as a physical trait but also as a significant medium of self-expression and identity formation. Individuals often construct meaning in their existence through social comparison, and the emotions generated in this process shape personality, self-concept, and various external behaviors. Interpersonal relationships, meanwhile, serve as a critical framework for human socialization, providing feedback and shaping identity throughout life. Although prior studies have examined the independent effects of social comparison, interpersonal relationships, and appearance management behaviors, few have empirically analyzed their dynamic interactions. Against this backdrop, the present study investigates the relationships between different forms of appearance management behaviors—including makeup, hair styling, clothing, and skin care—while assuming that interpersonal relationship tendencies and related psychological variables mediate the influence of women’s social comparison tendencies on such practices. The main objective of this research is to verify the extent to which social comparison tendencies impact appearance management behaviors and to examine whether interpersonal relationship tendencies play a mediating role in this relationship. Furthermore, by analyzing differences in appearance management patterns according to interpersonal tendencies, this study provides foundational data for designing customized counseling and intervention strategies tailored to the diverse needs of individuals in the beauty industry. Ultimately, the findings aim to contribute to a healthier and more positive perception of appearance, thereby supporting both personal well-being and professional practice in the beauty field.
