Abstract
This study empirically examines the relationship between perceptions of cosmetic ingredient safety and actual consumer behavior among female college students—an important demographic in the cosmetics market. Although interest in cosmetic safety has grown, it does not always lead to informed or cautious purchasing. To explore this gap, a survey was conducted with 284 female students at a four-year university in Seoul. The study investigated behaviors such as checking ingredients, awareness of expiration dates, hygiene practices with testers, and sources of safety information. Results showed that only 40.8% checked ingredients before purchasing, mainly due to time constraints and technical jargon. In contrast, 66.9% consistently checked expiration dates, suggesting that information accessibility plays a key role in consumer behavior.News articles (25.9%) were identified as the most influential source of safety information. Additionally, significant hygiene concerns were noted regarding the use of tester products, particularly lipsticks due to contamination risks. These findings offer insight into the cognitive-behavioral gap in young women's cosmetic consumption and highlight the need for improved consumer education, better hygiene standards, and informed cosmetic safety policies.
