Abstract
This study explored the impact of beauty lifestyle on cosmetic selection attributes and image-making self-efficacy. A survey was conducted among women aged 40 and older in the Busan area from July 3 to July 18, 2025. Out of the collected questionnaires, 319 were used for the final analysis, and the data were processed using SPSS 25.0. The findings are summarized as follows: First, beauty lifestyle positively influenced cosmetic selection attributes. Status-seeking significantly affected brand and value-for-money factors; practicality-seeking shaped functionality, price, and brand factors; and trend-seeking impacted brand and functional factors. Second, beauty lifestyle also had a significant positive effect on image-making self-efficacy. Practicality-seeking influenced both internal and social images, while status-seeking had a notable impact on social image. Third, cosmetic selection attributes significantly affected image-making self-efficacy. Functional and value-for-money factors positively influenced internal image, while functional, brand, and value-for-money factors enhanced social image. In conclusion, the beauty lifestyle of middle-aged women positively impacts their cosmetic consumption behavior and image-making, with cosmetic selection attributes serving as a significant mediating variable. To leverage these findings, it is essential to develop customized marketing strategies that resonate with the beauty lifestyle of middle-aged female consumers, alongside offering high-quality products at reasonable prices that meet both quality and psychological needs. Additionally, enhancing image-making self-efficacy is crucial as it influences appearance management, self-esteem, social relationships, and overall life satisfaction. Expanding beauty education and consulting programs to boost this self-efficacy can not only promote short-term consumption but also improve quality of life and encourage greater social participation.
