Abstract

This study examines research trends related to aesthetic medicine in Korea through text mining analysis. As aesthetic services increasingly converge with medical treatments—especially in skin care, cosmetic procedures, and wellness—the distinction between beauty and medicine has become less clear. To investigate this shift, we analyzed 265 academic journal articles published in Korea that included the keyword “aesthetic medicine,” sourced from the RISS database. Using Python-based text mining techniques, we performed keyword frequency analysis, TF-IDF scoring, word cloud visualizations, and keyword network analysis to explore the conceptual structure of the field. Our findings revealed that terms like “plastic surgery,” “service,” “satisfaction,” “customer,” and “medical tourism” frequently appeared and occupied central positions in the network, indicating a shift from physician-centered procedures to consumer-oriented service experiences. Additionally, network centrality metrics identified “plastic surgery” as a key hub, which formed thematic clusters with service quality and client satisfaction. Another cluster, featuring “medical tourism,” “China,” and “industry,” highlighted the growing impact of global healthcare markets. Visualizations created with Python and UCINET further confirmed the multifaceted nature of the discourse. This study contributes by providing a quantitative analysis of academic trends in Korean aesthetic medicine research and identifying emerging areas for non-medical professionals. While it is limited to Korean-language publications, it lays the groundwork for future interdisciplinary studies that integrate beauty, healthcare, and tourism. Subsequent research could incorporate topic modeling and qualitative interviews to enhance understanding of the evolving consumer-centered paradigms in aesthetic medicine. In particular, expanding cross-cultural comparisons and examining policy implications may offer valuable insights for scholars, practitioners, and industry stakeholders.
