Abstract

Loss of control due to ignorance or exclusion is common in modern society. People try to reward themselves with self-focus consumption to respond to loss of control. This study focuses on the recent trend of self-focus consumption. Specifically, the study predicts that if an individual feels threatened with loss of control due to negative events such as ignorance, rebuttal, or exclusion from others, people will seek self- affirmation to compensate for their own values and self-identity. Study1 results showed that the effect of the loss of control on the attitude toward self-focus consumption (‘Honbab’_Eating alone) was found that the experimental group (manipulation of loss of control) had a higher attitude toward self-focus consumption than the control group(no loss of control). The mediating effect of self-affirmation on the effect of loss of control on attitude toward self-focus consumption was examined. As a result, the indirect effect of self-affirmation was statistically significant when the dependent variables were Honbob(Eating alone), Study2 was conducted to see the moderated mediation effect of consumers' individual differences. As a result of moderated mediation effects of narcissism and self-affirmation were statistically significant when the dependent variables were Home Furnishing. This study provides the first step in understanding new trends such as the loss of control that prevails in modern society and self-focus consumption(Honbab_eating alone, Home Furnishing, etc.).
