Abstract

In this study, we examine how auto parts companies respond to the industrial transition toward an electric-vehicle (EV)-dominated market. Because components designed for traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles are largely incompatible with those required for EVs, scholars and practitioners alike have debated how this transition may reshape the entire automobile industry. Building on a natural selection perspective, we use scenario analyses to explore how the landscape of the auto parts sector is likely to evolve. Based on these analyses, we further investigate how auto parts firms adapt to environmental changes. Employing a multiple-case study approach, we identify patterns of strategic adaptation according to both the nature of auto parts and the organizational initiatives undertaken. Our findings highlight how companies seek to overcome structural inertia, mitigate dependence on major carmakers, and confront threats from de novo technology-based ventures dedicated to EV production. By doing so, this study contributes to a broader discussion of strategic adaptation in traditional industries undergoing radical technological shifts.
