챗GPT로 상징되는 생성형 AI의 등장은 전 산업 영역에 걸쳐 엄청난 변화를 초래하고 있다. 최근에는 텍스트를 넘어서 다양한 유형의 데이터를 처리하는 멀티모달 모델, 물리적 기기를 통해 환경과 상호작용하는 물리적 AI, 인간사고를 모방해 논리적으로 결론을 도출하는 추론형 AI 등 진화된 형태의 AI 모델이 속속 나타나면서 그 변화속도가 더 빨라지고 있는 추세이다. 모빌리티 산업, 특히 자율주행차 분야도 이 변화에서 예외가 아니다. 고도화된 AI모델이 자율주행기술에 광범위하게 적용되면서 자율주행차의 고질적인 한계들을 하나씩 극복하고 있기 때문이다. 이러한 AI기술은 자율주행차의 필수 기능인 인식, 판단, 제어 과정과 결합되면서 지능형 교통관리, 자율주행시스템 개선, 차량 내 지능형 서비스 제공, 사용자 경험 개선, 안전성 향상, 에너지 효율 최적화 등 자율주행차의 전반적인 성능 고도화에 기여하고 있다. 이처럼 급변하는 모빌리티 환경에서 글로벌 자율주행차 기업들도 AI 기술을 자율주행차에 적극적으로 도입하고 있는 중이다. 거대멀티모달모델(LMM)의 방대한 데이터 처리와 추론 능력을 자율주행 분야에 처음 적용한 웨이모(Waymo)를 필두로 바이두(Baidu), 웨이브(Wayve), 테슬라(Tesla), 와아비(Waabi) 등이 이러한 변화의 게임체인저들이다. 향후 미래 모빌리티 산업을 견인할 자율주행차와 AI기술의 만남이 결실을 맺기 위해서는 기술적, 사회적, 경제적, 환경적 해결 과제를 잘 정의하고 이를 해결하기 위한 사회적 합의와 이해관계자간의 협력, 그리고 정부차원의 정책적 뒤받침이 필요할 것으로 보인다.
Abstract
The rise of generative AI, symbolized by ChatGPT, is causing tremendous changes across all industries. In recent years, the pace of change has accelerated as more advanced AI models have emerged, including multimodal models that process various types of data beyond text, physical AI that interacts with the environment through physical devices, and reasoning AI that mimics human thinking and draws logical conclusions. The mobility industry, especially autonomous vehicles, is no exception to this shift. This is because advanced AI models are being widely applied to autonomous driving technology, overcoming the inherent limitations of autonomous vehicles one by one. These AI technologies, combined with the perception, decision, and control processes that are essential to autonomous vehicles, are contributing to the overall performance of autonomous vehicles, including intelligent traffic management, improving autonomous driving systems, providing intelligent in-vehicle services, improving user experience, enhancing reliability, and optimizing energy efficiency. In this rapidly changing mobility environment, global autonomous vehicle companies are also actively incorporating AI technology into their autonomous vehicles. The game changers include Waymo, Baidu, Wayve, Tesla, Waabi and so on. In order to realize the promise of autonomous vehicles and AI technology to drive the future mobility industry, it will require a well-defined set of technical, social, economic, and environmental challenges, social consensus and collaboration among stakeholders, and policy support from governments.
