Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyze the adaptive functions of simulation learning platforms in the context of STEM education. The study seeks to identify the level of adaptive functions in existing adaptive simulation learning platforms and to discuss implications for the future development of adaptive learning platforms. Method: Among simulation learning platforms, the analysis focused on three simulation-based learning platforms used in the STEM education that support adaptive learning through learning analysis of learners: ‘VlabOn’, ‘Entry’, and ‘VR Ecological Investigation and Anatomy’. The adaptive functions analyzed based on the metrics of AleF, adaptive learning framework, and the components of those metrics. Results: The platforms provide individualized learning paths, reward systems, personalized feedback, and individualized learning time. However, there were deficiencies in elements related to identifying learner characteristics, personalized assessment questions, personalized learning difficulty, wrong answer notes, performance reports, and personalized learning volume. Conclusion: Domestic adaptive simulation learning platforms generally emphasize 'adaptive features' along with 'simulation features', but the adaptive features that are being utilized are limited. In the future, adaptive simulation learning platforms should provide learning processes, learning contents, and learning recommendations based on the collected data. Additionally, it is necessary to improve functions to increase interaction between learners, and develop dashboards for learners and instructors to visually display learning progress and performance data.
