Abstract

Purpose: When utilizing audiovisual media, not only the quality of the content itself but also various environmental factors, such as screen size, can influence learning outcomes. This study was conducted to compare the effects of different screen sizes on the performance of various assembly tasks by adults with developmental disabilities and moderate intellectual impairment during video prompting interventions. Method: The independent variable in this study was the video prompting intervention, using three different screen sizes—smartphone, tablet computer, and smart monitor. These conditions were alternated randomly during video playback. The dependent variable was the performance of four assembly tasks with similar difficulty. This study employed an alternating treatment design, a type of single-subject design, to verify changes in task performance rates under different screen size conditions. Results: Effectiveness was observed under all three screen conditions. Nevertheless, all three participants showed the lowest performance rates under the small screen condition(smartphone), with Participant 3 displaying the most pronounced difference. Both the medium-sized tablet computer and the larger smart monitor conditions resulted in similarly high performance rates; however, Participant 3 demonstrated a slightly higher performance rate under the smart monitor condition. Conclusion: Taking into account differences in intellectual disability severity, adaptive behavior skill and attention span when determining screen size conditions could help enhance the effectiveness of video prompting and other video-based instruction.
