Abstract
This study examines the impact of urbanenvironmental characteristics on students’ academic achievement by controlling for various factors that may influence educational levels. Using ordered logistic regression analysis, this study analyzes data from the National Assessment of Educational Achievement for middle schools from 2017 to 2020 along with urban environment data from national spatial information systems. The results show that road density, number of intersections, commercial area ratio, and land use complexity within school districts significantly affect academic achievement. The study finds that while higher road density and land use complexity positively influence achievement, a higher number of intersections and commercial area ratio negatively impact it. These findings highlight the need to consider urban environmental factors in school district planning and educational policymaking, especially in the context of population decline and potential school consolidation. The limitations of this study include the use of aggregated data at the city/county/district level due to restrictions on accessing school-level achievement data, which may lead to an ecological fallacy. Future research should employ multilevel modeling using school identification information and incorporate students’ perceptions of their school and commuting environments to better understand the mechanisms of environmental influence on education.
