Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of religion and religiosity on smoking, drinking, and regular health screenings. An empirical analysis was conducted with an Ordinal logistic model using the 2021 Korean General Social Survey. In particular, a single variable was treated by calculating the average of the degree of religious belief and the degree of attendance of the religion based on non-religion and then distributing the religious variables. As a result of the analysis, first, when the response variable is the degree of smoking, Buddhist believers with high attendance and Protestant believers with high attendance are less likely to smoke than non-religious individuals. Also, when considering the degree of belief, only Protestant believers with a high degree of faith had a lower degree of smoking than non-religious individuals. Second, when the response variable was the degree of drinking, only Protestant believers with a high degree of faith were less likely to drink alcohol than non-religious individuals with a high frequency of attendance and a high level of attendance when accounting for socio-demographic background variables. Lastly, when the response variable was a health screening activity, regardless of the frequency of attendance and the degree of belief, Buddhist believers were more likely to perform health screenings than non-religious individuals. In the case of Protestants, those with high attendance and strong beliefs were more likely to perform health screenings than non-religious individuals. The results of this study confirm the contribution of Buddhism and Protestantism to health promotion activities, and it can be speculated that regular religious activities and beliefs may also be related to future mortality.
