Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine which types of religion and religiosity have a significant effect on subjective health status in chronic disease conditions. For the analysis, we selected an ordinal logistic model based on the 2021 <Korea General Social Survey>. The analysis results are summarized as follows. First, as a result of analyzing the effect of religion on subjective health status while chronic diseases are controlled, Buddhism with high attendance and strong faith had a higher level of subjective health status than without religion. Second, in the results of analyzing the effect of religion on subjective health status centered on subjects without chronic disease, Buddhism with a high frequency of attendance and Buddhism with a low level of faith had higher levels of subjective health status than those without religion. Finally, in the results of analyzing the effect of religion on subjective health status centered on subjects with chronic disease, Protestantism with high attendance frequency and Buddhism with strong faith reported more positive subjective health status than those without religion. These results show that Buddhism can contribute greatly to health promotion in the religious landscape of Korea and that social support from Protestantism can induce improvement in health status in the presence of chronic disease.
