Abstract

This paper examines how the translation between religious and secular language is practiced in the public engagement of Korean rural Protestant churches. Focusing on the case of Sion Church in Boryeong, South Chungcheong Province, the study analyzes how the church's social practices, though rooted in religious motivations, often omit explicit religious language in public settings. This phenomenon reveals how religious expression is constantly adjusted depending on context and location. Drawing on Paul Lichterman’s approach to the question of “how” religious expressions are used depending on the circumstances and Jürgen Habermas’s notion of translating religious language into secular discourse, this paper explores the complex ways in which religious communities communicate with broader society and make their religious presence known. By centering on the lived process of translation, the study calls for more empirical, field-based analyses in discussions of the public role of religion. It also points toward future research on the direction and mode of such translations, the multiple identities of religious actors, and the potential for mistranslation and retranslation.
