Abstract

The Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) and Community Health Survey (CHS)—play crucial roles in monitoring population health status and developing health policies. However, methodological differences between these surveys may lead to variations in certain health indicators. This study compared key health indicators from the 2022 KNHANES and CHS and analyzed how survey results are utilized in media reports. We compared key health behavior indicators (current smoking rate, monthly drinking rate, high-risk drinking rate) and chronic disease indicators (hypertension, diabetes) between the two surveys. Additionally, we reviewed media coverage from January 2023 to September 2024 to examine how these survey results were cited and interpreted. Results showed no statistically significant differences in health behavior indicators: current smoking rate (KNHANES: 17.7% vs. CHS: 19.3%, p=0.63), monthly drinking rate (KNHANES: 57.4% vs. CHS: 57.1%, p=0.95), and high-risk drinking rate (KNHANES: 14.2% vs. CHS: 12.6%, p=0.59). However, significant differences were found in chronic disease indicators: hypertension diagnosis experience rate (KNHANES: 28.2% vs. CHS: 19.8%, p<0.001) and diabetes diagnosis experience rate (KNHANES: 12.0% vs. CHS: 9.1%, p<0.001). Media analysis revealed that many reports presented results from both surveys in parallel without clearly explaining methodological differences, potentially causing confusion among readers. The differences in chronic disease indicators likely stem from methodological variations (self-reporting vs. clinical examination, sampling methods, and representative value calculation methods), which warrant further investigation. This study provides valuable insights by systematically analyzing differences between the two health surveys and identifying important considerations for interpreting health indicators.
