Abstract

With the recent advancement in autonomous driving technology, companies and institutions researching autonomous vehicles are working towards commercialization by providing autonomous taxi services in real road environments. However, there are still unresolved challenges related to safety issues, such as collision accidents occurring during autonomous driving, as well as legal and social responsibilities associated with these incidents. Therefore, in order to ensure the safety of autonomous driving, research on predicting the likelihood of traffic accidents during autonomous vehicle operation has been actively conducted. These studies primarily focus on using deep learning to analyze vehicle driving footage to predict potential traffic accidents in advance. However, existing deep learning-based traffic accident prediction studies have faced issues with low accuracy in accident prediction. In this paper, we propose a deep learning-based traffic accident prediction model to enhance the safety of autonomous vehicles by predicting the likelihood of traffic accidents in advance, allowing autonomous vehicles to take preventive measures. The proposed model combines YOLO, an effective neural network for real-time object detection within video frames, with a liquid neural network(LNN) which is suitable for analyzing data that evolves in complex ways over time. By detecting objects in real-time from the dashcam footage of a currently driving vehicle and analyzing the temporal movements of these detected objects, the model aims to predict the likelihood of traffic accidents. Furthermore, we enhanced the model's performance through hyperparameter tuning and model structure optimization Through performance comparison on average precision, the proposed model shows about 24% higher average precision than the existing model.
