Abstract

We are currently entering the ‘The Koran Wave’4.0 era, a time when Korean culture and Hangul are gaining significant global attention. This period highlights the phenomenon of Hangul evolving beyond a mere writing system into a valuable cultural asset. This study aims to explore the applicability of Hangul’s unique visual form, examine its cultural symbolism, and analyze the impact of the global expansion of Korean popular culture on Hangul’s international status. The study is based on a survey of 115 individuals, including professionals in design and cultural arts, designers, and students majoring in related fields. It investigates perceptions of Hangul’s formative characteristics and its value as a cultural asset. Additionally, it categorizes case studies from various fields to analyze how Hangul is being utilized in contemporary art. Furthermore, the study examines the potential applications of Hangul by assessing the perception and preference for consonants and vowels as visual form images. As a symbol of K-culture, Hangul plays a key role in fostering cultural exchange worldwide through the expansion of K-pop, K-dramas, and K-films, leading to increased interest in and learning of the Korean language. Moreover, recent research findings indicate a growing positive perception of Hangul among the public. Many people no longer regard Hangul as a mere script but as a core element of Korean culture, highly appreciating its aesthetic value and symbolic significance. The goal of this study is to identify the potential and significance of Hangul as a cultural asset that extends beyond a simple writing system and can be globally shared and enjoyed. Furthermore, this research aims to emphasize the necessity of continuous efforts and collaboration for the preservation and dissemination of Hangul.
