초록

Purpose: This study was done to explore the overall perspectives and experiences of adjustment among permanent colostomy patients. Methods: A qualitative method with content analysis was utilized. Participants with permanent colostomy were five men and two women from outpatient department in two university hospitals. Data were collected from iterative work with individual in-depth interviews from during the period from May to September, 2011. Contents of the interviews were tape-recorded with participant consent. Results: A total four major themes and nine sub-themes were emerged: a disorder which reversed one's life;changed radial range of life; shifting perspectives of the body; reconstructing values of beings. Each theme appeared to be interrelated as time passes. Findings indicated that it was capable of a care for the human being and of living with the new condition. Conclusion: Findings indicated that participants' physical and psychosocial needs were fully unmet. Patients with permanent colostomy were particularly vulnerable and expressed a need for more information on knowing what to expect after surgery. Therefore, it is necessary for nurses to provide information and support that were tailored to individual need as well as being responsive to urgent patient concerns.
