Abstract

Toegye was the representative scholar who raised the Confucian Moral Philosophy of Joseon in 16th century, and Seong Ho, 180 years later, also was the representative scholar who newly raised the Silhak in 18th century. Even though Seong Ho was the scholar who maintained the reform of social institutions of the late Joseon, he also was in succession to the Toegye in the respect of theory of moral self-cultivation than anyone else at the same time. Against the assumptions, Seong Ho' Silhak thought didn't criticize Confucian Moral Philosophy. On the contrary, he faithfully succeeded to Confucian Moral Philosophy, nevertheless developed the Silhak through Confucian Moral Philosophy. Seong Ho built up his academic foundation by succeeding to Confucian Moral Philosophy of Toegye. And on the foundation, he studied the realistic matters of social institution reforms, and absorbed the rational view of the western world, whose actual meaning was not an religion, but the 'the western learning' for Seong Ho. In those days, the western learning was considered as the western scientific knowledge. Seong Ho could developed the Silhak thought through the western learning. Thus, in the thought of Seong Ho, the traditional Confucian Moral Philosophy of Joseon and newly hatched Silhak thought, which was raised in the late Joseon, was not oppositive, but complementary, and of multi-level.
