Abstract

Jo Mok greatly contributed to succession and development of Lee Hwang’s Lihak(理學). He was deeply acknowledged by Lee Hwang in research on Gyeonghak(經學) and Simhak(心學). He researched the true meaning(眞意) by thoroughly analyzing the characters of phrases of Gyeongseo. His deep understanding of Gyeonghak greatly helped Lee Hwang to interpret Gyeongseo(經書). Also, his lifelong study was in research on Simhak. He insisted that one should eventually go forward to the stage that has no desire by gradually decreasing desire through the cultivation of mind. His research on Simhak provided Lee Hwang with the material about Jeong Minjeong (程敏政), the writer of 『Simgyeongbuju(心經附注)』 and made to newly assign ideological meaning of 『Simgyeongbuju』. Jo Mok’s provision of data helped Lee Hwang to compose 「Simgyeonghuron(心經後論)」 and could suggest 『Simgyeongbuju』 as one of new scriptures to open Joseon Lihak period. On the other hand, Jo Mok newly understood Ye(禮) of Geukgibokrye(克己復禮). He excluded a possibility to understand ye as empty Li(理) in the interpretation of Ye of Geukgibokrye, and insisted that is should be understood in the aspect of Silsa(實事). In respect of the understanding of the example of this Geukgibokrye, emphasis on Silsa can be said to be realized through his behavior and study.
