Abstract

Popularization of the classics is the work of answering the question, ‘how can classics communicate the present and the future?’ In this regard, the author reviews and analyzes current conditions based on translations and published works on the classics and discusses what value and meaning classics have nowadays. The author analyzes and evaluates the current trends and results of popularization of the classics in four parts: 1) conservation of national culture and publishing translations of Classical Chinese, 2) excavation of national classics and publishing Korean classical literature, 3) popular publications based on classical novels, and 4) a study of the popularization of works receiving attention in chapter 2. In chapter 3, the author suggests the direction of classic popularization from the viewpoint of ‘writing of interpretation’ and ‘contents (story-source).’ Although for a long time popularization centered on translation and publishing, the direction of future work on popularizing the classics is from the perspectives of ‘writing on interpretation’ and ‘content.’ Sometimes it took the form of theorizing or even writing intended for popular readership. In recent studies on classical literature, classical texts are linked to writing, games, movies, drama and other cultural contents, but there are some abstract or ambiguous cases. In academia and related university course curricula, research topics on popularization of classics are continuously planned and undertaken. There is a need to evaluate and share the direction of the discussion. Classical literature in film content, sightseeing content, educational content, local cultural content, etc., has attracted attention in areas such as utilization value. Literature majors in college know to take advantage of this course of study to be able to engage in related industries. To this end, we propose the related area in the curriculum be "content" production; students’ studies can be extended to content creation writing and storytelling.
