Abstract

This study examines the purpose and significance behind the creation and reception of the gasa (narrative poem) “Oryun-gara,” housed at the Korean Studies Advancement Center (한국국학진흥원), focusing on the period around 1920 in colonial Korea, when traditional Confucian ethics known as “Oryun” (Five Moral Relations) were still actively addressed. While various gasa poems based on Oryun exist, their exact contexts of creation and readership have rarely been clearly identified. In this respect, “Oryun-gara,” whose manuscript clearly indicates the period and suggests its audience, represents an exceptionally valuable historical source. Particularly notable is that the manuscript—created and circulated around 1920 in the Gyeongbuk region—contains classical Chinese poetry at the end, a genre typically favored by men, implying that its readership may not have been limited solely to women. The analysis reveals that “Oryun-gara,” much like other Oryunbased texts, emphasizes the importance of maintaining Confucian mo-ral standards. However, it distinctively highlights women’s chastity under the section of “Bubuyubyeol” (夫婦有別; distinction between husband and wife) and men’s loyalty under the “Gunsinyuui” (君臣有 義; righteousness between ruler and subject). Nevertheless, it is difficult to conclude that the poem merely replicates outdated Confucian values or clings to anachronistic ideologies. Instead, “Oryun-gara” can be interpreted as a literary response through which people sought psychological stability amidst the turbulent and anxious realities of colonial Korea after the March 1st Independence Movement of 1919, a period characterized by increasingly subtle forms of Japanese colonial control and rising feminist voices calling for women’s liberation. Ultimately, “Oryun-gara” reveals how contemporary Koreans utilized traditional Confucian teachings—the “old wisdom” of Oryun—as a psychological anchor to navigate and endure their colonial circumstances.
