Abstract
This study aims to understand consumer complicity mechanisms in unethical problematic behavior. The relationship between the phenomenon and influence variables that raise complicity possibilities is investigated based on empirical research of consumers. The results of the consumer survey are as follows. First, the data from 323 consumers who have experience many cases of unethical consumption are used for the analysis. The generalized linear model is performed to see the influences of each variable affecting the purpose of complicity. The ‘habit' is the common factor that affects the complicity intention of both ‘info-sharing' and ‘collective behavior'. Second, it is observed that social learning factors affect each variable of the theory of planned behavior and the intention of complicity. As a result, all variables of social learning theory have a positive impact on factors of the theory of planned behavior. Especially, according to the fact that the influential degree of ‘imitation' is the highest of all, the possibility of complicity can be accelerated, since consumers directly and indirectly experience their success through unethical methods. Furthermore, ‘differential association' of social learning theory directly increases the possibility of ‘info-sharing' complicity and ‘collective behavior' complicity, whereas ‘differential reinforcement' interacts with off-line social capital in terms of the intention of info-sharing complicity. Third, it is also examined that each factor of the theory of planned behavior has an effect on the intention of complicity. As a result, consumers' attitude and subjective norms have a positive effect on the complicity intention of ‘info-sharing', whereas the perceived behavior control that of ‘collective behavior'. In addition, the interaction with consumers' attitude, off-line social capital, subjective norms and self-justification increases the possibility of ‘collective behavior' complicity. Finally, an artificial neural network -- one of data-mining and machine learning -- is modeled with the verified variables in order to examine the complicity mechanism. As a result, since the error of the model appears to be lower, the influence variables selected in this study seem to be enough to explain consumers' complicity mechanism of unethical behavior. This study suggests the necessity of broad pan-social education for every consumer, various economic units who can be involved in complicity, in order to break off consumers' habit of complicity or imitation. Especially, it is proven that consumer education from childhood is important in preventing bad habits and correcting bad attitude. In addition, with the observed results showing the possibility of complicity can be increased based on the level of individual rationalization, opportunity, motive, capital, etc, it is suggested that consumers can reduce their motives through continuous information delivery and education system. In other words, it must be imprinted that the loss from complicity can pass on consumers with a lot of consumer damages and less utility.
