Abstract

This paper sought to understand the life and literary activities of Seol Jang-su, a naturalized Uyghur writer who lived in the period from the late Goryeo dynasty to the early Joseon dynasty, and to explore the aspects and characteristics of his poetry and to gauge his status in the field of literature in the era from the late Goryeo to the early Joseon dynasty. Seol Jang-su showed outstanding qualities as a politician, diplomat, scholar, and writer based on his linguistic and literary abilities as well as his approach international affairs. Seol Jang-su played a prominent role in diplomatic relations with the Ming dynasty, and became a key figure in domestic politics as he joined the political lines with the younger reformers of the Goryeo dynasty. In terms of literary activities, Seol Jang-su participated in the compilation of 『Geunsajaeilgo』, 『Mokeunjip』, and 『Unjaejip』, and was responsible for the establishment and operation of interpretation institutions in the early Joseon dynasty, and he made remarkable achievements such as compiling 『Jikhae-Sohak』. Meanwhile, in this paper, the Chinese poem 27 and Sijo 1 numbers of Seol Jang-su are found and organized. Through this, he tried to identify the thematic direction and characteristics of his poetry literature. As a result, it was possible to identify the characteristics of the beginning that revealed sensitivity based on the theme tendency to express agony from external trials and the seasonal background. In addition, he created a fisherman-shaped Chinese poem to express his life and to write songs that encouraged him to be careful in his speech and actions, showing the aspect of a scholar who lived in a chaotic period. Through this information, it is thought that it will be possible to fully gauge what Seol Jang-su's status was like in the literature field during the late Goryeo dynasty and early Joseon dynasty.
