Abstract

As a scholar and government official in the late Joseon Dynasty, Seongjae Heojeon was did not place great meaning on literature, but he was very skilled in the creation of literary works. He was familiar with the composition of poetry, enjoyed reading other people's literary works, and had a deep understanding of the correlation between the contents of writing and the form of the work, but he had a universal literary view, one which had continued to that period. Even if he denied the theory that "one should build poetry if there is a grievance" or "one becomes excellent in poetry after being poor" and emphasized originality rather than the establishment of examples, his literary view was basically similar to the traditional literary view. When we directly observe the poems of Heojeon, who held such a literary view, we can see that he had considerable ability in the creation of poems. This is because his poems contain consciousness and emotions that occur in response to situations without using special literary rhetoric or techniques, which makes the poems more comfortable and accessible, conveying the authenticity of emotion more effectively than poetry filled with literary rhetoric in pursuit of artificial beauty. The poetry of Heojeon is simple, straightforward, and more focused on contents than expression, and therefore it would be hard say that his poem pursues literary aesthetics. However, due to these characteristics, the poems of Heojeon reached a high level of literary achievement in empathetic identifiation.
