Abstract

At a time when consumers’ advertising skepticism is increasing in online news media, examining the effect of advertising type and appeal type on advertising skepticism becomes a crucial factor related to the advertising effectiveness of online news media. However, studies comparing the effects of different types of native advertising in the context of online news are scarce. Therefore, this study classified native advertising types into a relatively new form, listicle, and a traditional form, narrative, and examined the differences in their effect on advertising skepticism based on the appeal type. Additionally, this study investigated the mediating effects of processing fluency and perceived self-completion in this relationship. This study employed an experimental design and tested its hypotheses. This study shows that functionality appeal has lower advertising skepticism on listicle than narrative. In contrast, green appeal has lower advertising skepticism on narrative than listicle. In addition, the effects of listicle on advertising skepticism are mediated by processing fluency. In contrast, the effects of narrative on advertising skepticism are mediated by self-completion. This study examined the characteristics of native advertising types in online news media and investigated their effects on advertising skepticism based on advertising appeal type. Additionally, it explored the mechanisms between factors influencing advertising skepticism, thus expanding our understanding of the factors influencing advertising skepticism.
