번역 관점에서 본 역사문헌 어휘연구의 방법 모색 -실제 사례를 중심으로-

이 글에서는, 역사문헌 어휘 연구 각 단계마다 해야 할 일과 주의할 점을 실제 연구 사례를 들어 서술하였다. 실제 어휘 연구 과정은 (1)출현 빈도 조사, (2)기존 풀이 검토, (3)원의 파악, (4)번역 형태 결정의 4단계를 거쳤다. (2)기존 풀이 검토는, 각종 사전 의 풀이 내용 전부에 대해 일일이 사실 여부를 각종 자료를 통해 검증하는 것이다. 이 과정을 통해 해당 어휘의 뜻에 대해 기존의 성과를 흡수하고, 어휘에 관한 주변 지식을 습득하고 쟁점 사안을 파악해 이후의 연구 방향을 설정할 수 있게 된다. (3)원의 파악 단계에서는, 원의를 설명하는 원문 자료를 수집해 참고하는 방법과 어휘를 구성하는 각 글자의 뜻을 밝히고 그 글자 간의 연결 관계를 고려해 원의를 유추하는 방법 두 가지를 서술하였다. 이 과정에서 견지해야 할 것은 한마디로 말하면 철저한 증거주의이다. 아울러 이전 원문 자료를 근거로 활용할 때는 어휘의 字意와 문맥적 의미를 구별해야 하며, 정황만으로 의미를 짐작하는 것을 경계해야 함을 언급하였다. (4)번역 형태를 정하는 단계에서는 몇 가지 주의할 점과 제안을 언급하였다. 원문의 용어를 그대로 번역서의 용어로 간주하는 것은 어휘 사용의 혼선에 해당한다. 용어로 번역할지를 판단할 때는 의미 전달성 외에 양식적 간결성도 중요한 기준으로 삼아야 한다. 원의 전달성과 가독성에 대해 모순 관계의 틀을 벗어나기 위해 두 대상을 각각 요소별로 쪼개서 바라볼 필요가 있다.
Abstract
This article describes the tasks that should be performed and the cautions to be taken at each stage of vocabulary research in historical literature, using a case example of actual research. The actual vocabulary research process proceeded through four steps: (1) investigating the frequency of appearance, (2) reviewing existing solutions, (3) identifying sources, and (4) determining the form of translation. The second step of reviewing existing solutions is to verify whether all explanations in various dictionaries are factual based on various data. Through this process, it is possible to absorb the existing findings regarding the meaning of the vocabulary, acquire surrounding knowledge about the vocabulary, identify issues, and set the direction of future research. For the third step of identifying the original meaning, two methods are described: a method of collecting and referring to original text materials explaining the original meaning, and a method of revealing the meaning of each letter that makes up the vocabulary and inferring the original meaning by considering the connection between the letters. It is emphasized that thorough evidentialism must be maintained in this process. In addition, when using previous original data as a basis, one must distinguish between the literal meaning of the vocabulary and the contextual meaning, and be careful to interpret the meaning through the context. For the fourth step of determining the translation word, this study offers several precautions and suggestions. Regarding the term of the original text to be the term of the translation would be equivalent to committing a confusion in vocabulary use. When deciding whether to translate into a certain term, in addition to conveying meaning, stylistic conciseness should be an important criterion. In order to move beyond a framework that sets up a contradiction between communicability of original meaning and readability, it is necessary to look at these two objects by dividing them into elements.
