Abstract

This study investigates how the advance and retreat dilemma (jintoe; 進退) that permeates the literary world of Toeyudang Kim Su-heung (退憂堂 金壽興) was poetically figured within the specific spatiotemporal contexts of his exile and retirement. It further examines the process through which this internal conflict evolved into a philosophical consciousness of cosmological space-time and explores its intellectual correlation with the Baegak Poetry Circle’s Treatise on True Poetry (Jinshi-ron; 眞詩論). Kim's life was marked by repeated oscillations between the office of the Chief State Councilor and banishment during the turbulent factional realignments (hwanguk; 換局) of King Sukjong's reign. Moreover, his life was an experience of extreme spatiotemporal fracture. This engendered in his poetry an internal conflict between public duty, represented by 'advance' (jin; 進), and private ideals, symbolized by 'retreat' (toe; 退). In his early exile poems, he positioned himself as a loyal, isolated subject (gochin; 孤臣). However, recurring frustrations led to a self-deprecating realization that worldly honor (gongmyeong; 功名) was nothing more than a “floating name” (bumyeong; 浮名). This profound skepticism toward worldly space-time prompted a turn to the extramundane sphere (muloe; 物外) as an alternative. For Kim, retirement (eunnil; 隱逸) was an active spiritual endeavor to cast off corporeal servitude (hyeongyeok; 形役) and construct an inner spatiotemporality of solitary joy (dongnak; 獨樂). Through temporal contemplation that expanded from decades to centuries, he established a worldview of equanimity (dalgwan; 達觀). Crucially, this was not an erasure of worldly sorrow, but rather a dynamic process of contemplating his anguish and regret within the grander Way of Heaven (Cheondo; 天道). His Doknak Pavilion (獨樂亭) functioned as a philosophical space for this practice of an extramundane life. This paper argues that Kim's philosophical achievements inevitably corresponded with the Baegak Poetry Circle’s Jinshi-ron within the shared tradition of their family’s learning (gahak; 家學). A conceptual correspondence is evident among the ideas of abiding in stillness (cheojeong; 處靜), overcoming the contrived mind (gisim; 機心), and apprehending Heaven’s workings (cheongi; 天機). While no sources confirm any direct influence—and a clear difference exists between Kim's personal cultivation and the Circle's systematized theory—this study posits their correlation within the scope of “intellectual provenance and conceptual correspondence,” highlighting an intergenerational continuity of poetic and philosophical practice. Through this analysis, Kim Su-heung can be re-evaluated as a seminal figure who transcended the label of a high official-littérateur, sublimating the spatiotemporal constraints of his political reality into universal philosophical thought. His literary explorations within the jintoe dilemma not only artistically embodied the anguish of his time but also opened the philosophical horizon for the emergence of the later Jinshi-ron within his family's scholarly lineage.
