본 연구의 목적은 영국의 필리핀 점령과 지배(1762-1764)와 관련된 역사적 사실을 재구성하고, 그 과정을 통해 당시 유럽 국제관계의 한 단면을 새롭게 조명해 보고자 하는 것이다. 식민모국인 스페인의 대외관계에 기인하여 식민지인 필리핀이 영국에게 지배받게 되는 면면들을 추적해 나간다. 그 현상은 한마디로 ‘7년 전쟁’의 파편이 필리핀으로 날아든 것으로 해석 가능하겠다. 역사연구 방법론은 다양하지만 이 글에서는 엄밀한 사료비판에 기초한 객관적이고 과학적인 역사기술과 세계사적 관점의 종합적 파악을 위해 ‘연대기적 서술방식’으로 내용을 전개해 나간다. 유럽에서 7년 전쟁(Seven Years War, 1756-1763년)은 처음에는 오스트리아와 프러시아 사이의 대립이었으나, 전쟁이 진행되면서 영국과 프랑스가 주도하게 되었다. 그것은 바로 영국과 프랑스가 해외식민지 경쟁에서 주도권을 장악하기 위한 움직임이었다. 영국이 우위를 점하는 상황에 이르자 프랑스는 스페인에게 지원을 요구하게 되었다. 따라서 스페인이 프랑스와 연합하게 되자 영국은 스페인도 대척점의 정면에 세우게 되고, 응징해야 된다는 명분을 구상하기에 이른다. 그 결과적 징후로는 필연적으로 스페인의 식민지들도 그 구상에 포함되기에 이른다. 동남아의 필리핀이 영국의 침략을 받게 되는 배경이었다. 침략에 성공하고, 영국지배는 1년 반 동안 진행되었다. 이 글에서는 영국의 침략 배경, 침략을 위한 구상, 침략과 지배, 그리고 그것의 반환 상황들을 재구성해본다.
Abstract
The purpose of the study is to deeply and thoroughly investigate the British occupation and rule of the Philippines(1762-174). In this connection, this study surveys the historic facts employing 'the descriptive way of chronicle history' as a methodology for the study of history. Seven Years War(1756-1763) occurred, for a start, owing to the confrontation between Austria and Prussia. However, as the war proceeded, it became the conflicts between England and France. It was mainly the process and movement for the holding of hegemony between the two countries in the competition of overseas colony expansion. As England had a dominant position in the war, France begged support from Spain. As Spain was in alliance with France, England attempted to attack the Philippines, the Spanish overseas colony. This was the background for British invasion into the Philippines. In this paper, the writer tried to reconstruct/reorganize the background and design for British invasion into the Philippines, her occupation and rule, and her return of the conquered territory.
