Abstract

Due to a distinctive world view of Burmese dynasties, Kayin society had a loose ethnicity. However, this ethnicity had changed in a totally different way after British colonization. During the reign of Burmese Kingdom, Burmese people were majorities, and Kayin people had suffered from economic exploitation for a long time. In the 19th century when the British colonial power began to dominate in Myanmar, Kayin people started to resist against integration and assimilation into Burmese society. Around this time, British colonization, Christianity and advanced civilization were brought to Kayin people who were persecuted by Burma Kingdom, and these features acted as a detonator to express Kayin people's anger against Burmese people and desire for social promotion. Kayin people volunteerly accepted Christianity. Their loyalty to Christianity was expanded to loyalty to the British colonial government, and thus Kayin people actively supported British colonial policies. Such a loose boarder and ethnicity unique to Kayin people was reinforced in the British colonization era. These ethnic peculiarities are not just a result of the Britain colonial domination but also a product of the active participation of Kayin people to develop their own identity.
