초록
In the 21st century, Indonesia and India’s relations are being dramatically enhanced. The two countries attempt to rejuvenate their bilateral collaboration and cooperation as they did in 1950s. Indeed, the two countries enjoyed warmest relations when the leaders of two countries, Sukarno and Nehru, led the Non‐Alignment Movement in the mid‐1950s. This paper analyzes the causes of increasingly strong ties between them and its impacts on the international relations in the Asian region. For a comprehensive approach, the paper examines the two countries’ security and economic cooperation because these factors are crucial to understand recent developments. Indonesia supported India’s entry into the ASEAN Regional Forum and the East Asian Summit, while improved economic cooperation through the frequent state visits. India responded to the Indonesian initiative with the massive increase of trade and investment. Although their trade ties have not realized their true potential, the increased pace of trade volume has been extraordinary. The two countries signed the ‘Strategic Partnership’ in 2005, and are now negotiating the ‘Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Partnership.’ The cooperation between the two countries is being expanded from security and defense to trade and investment. The paper demonstrates that the growing convergence of security and economic interests between Indonesia and India has made the two countries closer again from the onset of the 21st century.
