Abstract

Korean-Thai transliteration is important for translation of Korean Culture-bound terms to maintain the identity, pride and integrity of the language. Meanwhile, the standard Korean-Thai transliteration guideline which is created through a Romanization standard instead of directly from Korean to Thai was found particularly unsatisfy every Korean consonant transcription into Thai. Therefore, this study aimed to observe the appropriation of Korean-Thai consonant transliteration rules by survey the opinion of Korean students majoring in Thai translation and interpretation, Korean and Thai consonant system along with Korean-Thai consonant transliteration rules established by the Royal Institute compared with Korean Romanization standard. The findings of this study was that, impacted by Korean consonant assimilation, there are some rules considered to be added into Korean-Thai consonant transliteration guideline including ‘re-syllabification’, ‘tensification and aspiration of ㄱ,ㄷ,ㅂ,ㅈ’, ‘nasalization of ㄱ,ㄷ,ㅂ last consonant and ㄹ first consonant’, ‘ㄹ assimilation’, ‘palitalization of ㄷ,ㅌ,ㅅ,ㅆ’ to correctly represent the pronunciation of Korean words. Also it is found that some of Korean consonant assimilation had been already included in the guideline.
