초록

This study analyzes the relationship between Kingdom of Ayutthaya and Lan Xang in political and economic terms between 1350 and 1767. First, in political relation because the territories of the two kingdoms were adjacent to each other, it emerged as a relationship between friendly countries to wage war to represent territorial expansion and the king's power, or to jointly counter Burma's threats. In particular, the relationship between the two kingdoms began to become clear as King Chakraphat of Ayutthaya and King Setthathirath of Lan Xang signed a mutual friendship and nonaggression treaty to jointly cope with the threat of expanding the power domain of King Bayinnaung of Burma. The relationship between the two kingdoms then proceeded in the nature of the Lan Xang kingdom seeking assistance from the Ayutthaya kingdom. Second, trade relations were characterized by the nature of mutual trading partners, the Lan Xang Kingdom was a supplier of goods needed in the markets of neighboring kingdoms, and Ayutthaya played an important role as a collection of goods for merchants to supply within the Lan Xang Kingdom. Although not included in this study, considering the political and economic relations of the two kingdoms, it is believed that they clearly had various relationships with each other in terms of social and cultural aspects. The reason is that the two kingdoms border each other, so faith, culture, and art are naturally introduced and transmitted through mutual exchange.
