Abstract
Recently “don’t-ask-me” crime(random violence), which refers to expressive violence toward strangers without any specific motives, became a serious social problem in Korea. However, due to difficulty in defining this kind of crime in academic or practical way, preceding researches are not active enough and their discussion has somewhat limitation. Preceding domestic researches tried to redefine “don’t-ask-me” crime as motiveless crime, crime with abnormal motives, or random crime in order to overcome the it’s conceptual imperfection. And, they tried to categorize and examine the seriousness of those crime. They also suggested some countermeasures to solve and prevent those problem on the basis of causality analysis on phenomenal random or motiveless crime. Nevertheless, those kinds of approach to “don’t-ask-me” crime put too much attention to offenders and their psychological abnormality, resulting in lack of consideration on meaning and influence of “don’t-ask-me” crime discourse which is socially constructed. This research adopts alternative perspectives of constructionism and post-modernism to explain “don’t-ask-me” crime. The author asserted that through the alternative explanation on characteristics, construction, and influence of “don’t-ask-me” crime discourse, researchers will get some insights to overcome the limitations of traditional approach and find a way to practical and effective solution to the crime problem.
