Abstract
The latent fingerprint is an important physical evidence available in the crime scene. It is difficult to develop latent fingerprint on highway ticket by using general enhancement methods because it consists of both the porous (paper) and non-porous (magnetic) surfaces. This study compared both effectiveness and potential of fluorescent reagents (DMAB, DMAC, PECA multiband), in the development of latent fingerprints on highway ticket. The right-hand thumb impressions (fingerprints) of thirty volunteers were collected on highway tickets, across both the magnetic and paper surfaces. The experiments were divided into three stages according to the fingerprint ageing on highway ticket. 1 day, 3 days and 7days old fingerprints were prepared by keeping the highway tickets at room temperature. The fingerprints were developed with three different reagents. Among all the reagents used, DMAB has not developed fingerprints of any time period (age). The 3 days old latent fingerprints were developed by both DMAC and PECA multiband. The 7 days old latent fingerprints were developed better by using DMAC than by using PECA. Although, those reagents could develop latent fingerprints on the paper surface, it was challenging to develop fingerprints on the magnetic surface, due to the difference in exposure time required for both the surfaces. In conclusion, it is confirmed that both DMAC and PECA are suitable reagents to develop fingerprints on highway tickets. DMAC is considered excellent in developing more aged fingerprints. The effectofboththereagentsonthemagneticsurface resulted in poor contrast with the background, in comparison to the paper surface. To increase the contrast, we are examining latent fingerprints on the magnetic surface, by using several enhancement techniques.
