Abstract

This study aimed to address the limitations in effective latent fingerprint development on thermal paper, which arise from the differing material properties of the front (thermal side) and back (non-thermal side) surfaces. Typically, fingerprint development is limited to the thermal side of thermal paper, or the same reagent is applied to both sides, restricting the usability of such evidence. To improve this, DMAC and 1,2-IND reagents with different polar solvent ratios were applied separately to the thermal and non-thermal sides of the thermal paper, as they are suitable for fingerprint development on these surfaces. The conventional immersion method for fingerprint development on paper can cause blackening of the thermal side. In this study, after developing fingerprints on the thermal side, Scotch tape was applied to prevent blackening on the thermal side when developing fingerprints on the non-thermal side. Applying scotch tape not only suppressed blackening of the thermal side but also protected the developed fingerprints. Additionally, the tape helped reveal overlapping letters, thereby increasing the minutiae count in the fingerprints. The experimental results confirmed that DMAC was the most effective reagent for fingerprint development on the thermal side, and the development time was significantly reduced from 12 hours to within 15 minutes with heat treatment at 50°C. On the non-thermal side, 1,2-IND was effective in producing high-contrast fingerprints through a strong fluorescent reaction. The findings of this study suggest a practical and efficient method for significantly enhancing fingerprint collection rates on thermal paper.
