Abstract
According to cognitive theories of crime desistance, not only change in external factors such as social bonding but also change in internal factors like self-concept have impacts on change in one’s criminality. This study tests the interaction effects of the change in the attachment(to parents, to teachers, to friends) and the change in deviant self-concept on the change in delinquency using HLM 8.0 software with 6 waves of KYPS 2-year-middle school data. The results showed that low negative self-concept increased the negative effects of attachment to parents and attachment to teachers on delinquency. Negative self-concept, however, did not significantly moderate the effect of attachment to friends on delinquency. Future research on the cognitive theories of crime desistance needs to focus on testing more sophisticated theoretical propositions with proper analytic strategies.
